HISTORY
The Duke Boutique Hotel is located in a former post office in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. The post and telegraph office opened its doors in 1896. Mail had to be delivered by horse and cart between Kerkstraat and Central Station. In 1938, a new office was opened near Central Station to improve logistics—but there was still a shortage of space on Kerkstraat. In the 1960s, the idea arose to completely demolish the building and purchase additional properties on Kerkstraat and Korte Putstraat—so that a larger new post office could be built.
This new post office opened in 1971, but people weren’t happy with it. For years, there were complaints about the appearance of this “gray” building and the amount of traffic in this central part of town. After the postal service vacated the building, it was finally renovated in 2010. The old facade was partially preserved, and the new facade was built one meter further forward. This has given the building a friendlier and more modern appearance.
In our Deluxe Rooms, Junior Suites, and the St. John Suite, you’ll find beautiful original features from the 1971 post office. We’ve left the original ceiling intact, as well as the concrete facades.
